My name is Peter Harris and I want to tell you my story.
Until recently, I was a sole practitioner in a business Consultancy practice in Auckland.
Immediately prior to that, I was a partner in a chartered accounting practice in Auckland. We had built up the practice over a period of some 20 years and as you will know we experienced all the usual joys and woes that accompany that process.
On 25 August 2000, my wife and I were literally 20 minutes from leaving for the airport to attend a family wedding in Colorado. My doctor phoned and effectively canceled the whole process by informing me that routine medical tests highlighted some abnormalities.
What followed was an operation the next day for Colon cancer and certain disclosure of a large secondary growth in the liver. This was and is inoperable.
The purpose of my telling you this story is to highlight that some clouds have a silver lining.
Four years prior to this sequence of events I had taken out an insurance policy against critical illness (trauma) on the advice of my insurance adviser, Maurice Trapp.
At the time of the operation, the system swung into gear and within a month $350,000 had been deposited to my bank account.
My term loan, bank overdraft, all creditors and continuing automatic payments and direct credits were more than adequately covered.
I find it somewhat difficult to sufficiently express the huge relief that this provided. I had absolutely no financial stress and was able to focus on recovering from the surgery.
I still have a major problem with my liver but to all intents and purposes I have been able to effectively manage the wind down of my business with no stress.
Now, I know that many of my fellow professionals are loathe to undertake expenditure on their own behalf unless it relates directly to the practice, e.g. computer developments, motor vehicles O.F.E. etc. LET ME TELL YOU That morning in 1996 when I made the decision in respect of trauma insurance was the best morning's work I have ever achieved.

Dear Maurice and Shari,
I am just writing to thank you for the exception service you have provided with respect to my general life, income protection, trauma, etc insurance arrangements.
As a lawyer in a specialist corporate, commercial and ICT practice, it is critical that I ensure that my family is protected should anything happen to me as the sole earner.
The professional manner in which you reviewed and re-organised my insurance arrangements with that in mind stood me in great stead when I had an unforeseen need for surgery earlier this year (2003). I am particularly grateful to Shari for her tenacity and initiative in securing a claim payment that I would not even have thought to make!
I have already recommended your service to friends and contacts and will have no hesitation in continuing to do so.

Dear Shari,
As you are aware, Andrea has played an important role in the development of our family business.
Following our consultation with yourself and Maurice we accepted your recommendation to institute both Life & Trauma cover to ensure both our family and business were well placed in the face of unexpected health circumstances.
As it happened, Andrea was diagnosed with an aggressive melanoma, and was operated on twice to ensure appropriate margin was provided to give her every chance that there would be no reoccurrence.
Initially, we thought that the circumstances surrounding the melanoma were not serious enough to trigger the trauma policy, but following a chance remark to you during our policy review, you initiated a claim which has now been accepted by our insurers.
Payment of $250,000 has been made to our family trust account.
This is a testimony to the quality of the advice we received during your thorough evaluation of our needs at the very commencement of our relationship.
At this point we are delighted to confirm that Andrea remains in the best of health, and that we appreciate that our interests are being served so well, and professionally, by you, Maurice and your team.
We are advising our friends to consider their ongoing needs, and are recommending they contact you to review their requirements. We trust these recommendations will result in benefits for both them and you.
Wishing you our kindest regards, and every success and happiness,
Paul and Andrea L’Amie |
